Ever wanted to do something like:
on level 1, do 5 damage
on level 2, do 8 damage
on level 3, do 12 damage
on level 4, do 17 damage
on level 5, ...

And you didn't want to go with "If level equal to 1 then ..., if level equal to ..."?
But, unfortunately, the level-based formula just doesn't want to come?

Plug in the expected result per level, hit "find", and, with a bit of luck, something of use will pop up.
