There isn't much strategy in the way you climb, but it's about making decisions about whether you should take your time to level up, or take risks in order to risk it all by climbing el cap first. This is not a single player game, you have to play with some more people in order for it to have a point(who can climb El Cap first).
What you do is boulder around for a while, and see what the other climbers have to say about the crags(in a Zelda type of way). Later you will get yourself a piton, and try the trad climb. After you are on the first ledge it will tell you to place a piton. If you don't then you risk a likely death, but if you do you can keep trying to get that move down and be rewarded greatly.
Money buys you pitons and powerbars. What level you are at determines how good you are at doing the crux(hardest part) of the climb.
El Cap is going to be hard if you are only at level 5, but if you are at level 10 it might be a breeze. You should bring the right amount of pitons and power bars with you, talk to people to find out the exact amount.
